PA6 Nylon vs MC Nylon: Choosing for Mechanical Loads

When it comes to engineering plastics, Nylon (Polyamide) is often the go-to material for its excellent balance of mechanical properties. However, at Cylex Plastics, we frequently get asked: “Should I use PA6 or MC Nylon for my high-load application?”

While both share a similar chemical DNA, their manufacturing processes create distinct physical properties. Choosing the wrong grade can lead to premature part failure or unnecessary costs. Let’s break down how to choose based on your specific mechanical load requirements.

1. Understanding the Manufacturing Gap

The primary difference lies in how these materials are formed:

  • PA6 (Extruded Nylon): Produced via an extrusion process where the resin is melted and pushed through a die. This results in a material with high crystallinity and good toughness.
  • MC Nylon (Monomer Casting/PA6G): Produced through an anionic polymerization process. The material “grows” in the mold at atmospheric pressure, resulting in higher molecular weight and better internal stress distribution.

2. Mechanical Strength and Load-Bearing Capacity

If your application involves heavy static loads or high-pressure environments, MC Nylon (PA6G) generally holds the advantage.

Because MC Nylon has a higher degree of crystallinity than extruded PA6 Nylon, it offers:

  • Higher tensile strength and compressive strength.
  • Superior hardness and stiffness.
  • Better dimensional stability under load.

For smaller, high-precision components that require impact resistance and flexibility, extruded PA6 is often the more cost-effective and resilient choice.

3. Wear Resistance and Friction

In moving mechanical assemblies, friction generates heat. MC Nylon features a higher heat deflection temperature than standard PA6. Furthermore, MC Nylon is often easier to infuse with solid lubricants (like MoS2 or Oil) during the casting process.

Choose MC Nylon Sheet & Rod for: Large gears, heavy-duty rollers, and wear pads where lubrication is difficult to maintain.

Choose PA6 for: General-purpose bushings, fasteners, and components where high impact toughness is needed to prevent cracking.

4. Size Matters

Mechanical load is often tied to the scale of the part. Due to the extrusion process, PA6 is typically limited to smaller diameters and thinner sheets. If your mechanical design requires massive plates or large-diameter rods to support heavy machinery, MC Nylon is the only viable option, as it can be cast into nearly any size without internal voids.

Conclusion: Which should you choose?

At Cylex Plastics, we recommend PA6 for its toughness and economy in smaller mechanical parts. However, for industrial-grade applications requiring maximum load capacity, wear resistance, and large-scale dimensions, MC Nylon is the superior engineering choice.
