In the demanding world of semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace engineering, and analytical instrumentation, the Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) environment presents unique challenges. Choosing the wrong material can lead to “outgassing,” which contaminates vacuum chambers and ruins sensitive processes. Two materials dominate this space: Vespel® PI (Polyimide) and PEEK (Polyetheretherketone).
At Cylex Plastics, we provide high-quality materials to help engineers make the right choice. In this post, we compare the performance of Vespel® PI and PEEK in UHV environments to help you optimize your vacuum systems.
The Critical Factor: Outgassing in UHV
In UHV systems (typically defined as pressures lower than 10-7 mbar), the primary concern is outgassing—the release of trapped gases from a solid material. High outgassing rates make it impossible to reach or maintain deep vacuum levels.
- Vespel® PI: Widely considered the “gold standard” for UHV. It has extremely low outgassing rates even at elevated temperatures. Vespel® Polyimide PI Sheet & Rod are inherently “clean” and do not contain additives that might migrate or evaporate.
- PEEK: While Unfilled PEEK is excellent for many vacuum applications, it has a slightly higher outgassing rate compared to Vespel®. However, for most High Vacuum (HV) and many UHV applications, PEEK is a highly effective and more cost-efficient solution.
Thermal Stability and Operating Limits
Temperature and vacuum performance go hand-in-hand. When a vacuum system requires “bake-out” cycles to remove water vapor, material limits are tested.
- Temperature Range: Vespel® can withstand continuous operation at 288°C (550°F) and excursions up to 482°C (900°F). If your UHV application involves extreme heat, Vespel® is the only viable choice.
- Versatility of PEEK: For applications with lower temperature requirements, PEEK tubes and small diameter PEEK rods offer excellent mechanical strength and chemical resistance up to 250°C.
Mechanical and Specialized Performance
Depending on the specific vacuum component—whether it’s a wafer carrier, an insulator, or a fastener—different grades of PEEK may be required:
- Structural Integrity: PEEK-GF30 (Glass-Filled) provides superior stiffness for structural parts.
- Static Dissipation: In semiconductor UHV environments where ESD is a concern, ESD PEEK Sheet & Rod is an essential choice to protect sensitive circuits.
- Alternative Solutions: In some UHV scenarios, Ultem1000 PEI is also used for its high dielectric strength and low moisture absorption, though it sits below Vespel and PEEK in thermal performance.
Comparison Table: Vespel® PI vs. PEEK
| Property | Vespel® PI | PEEK (Unfilled) |
|---|---|---|
| UHV Suitability | Excellent / Preferred | Good to Very Good |
| Outgassing Rate | Ultra-Low | Low |
| Max Temp (Continuous) | 288°C | 250°C |
| Cost Efficiency | Premium | Economical Comparison |
Which Should You Choose?
If your project demands the ultimate in cleanliness, zero-fail performance at high temperatures, and the lowest possible outgassing, Vespel® PI is the necessary investment. If your vacuum requirements are slightly less extreme, or if you are working with complex geometries that require the toughness of PEEK film or specialized rods, PEEK offers a high-performance, cost-effective alternative.
